Joey Fisher was born in Orillia, Ontario in 1989, where he currently resides to this day. He graduated from Lakehead University in 2012 and has worked as an educator for six years. Joey began his teaching career on a fly-in-reserve in Northern Ontario, developing an appreciation for First Nations history and culture. It was during this teaching experience that Joey was inspired to write his first novel, Beneath the Northern Lights. This story explores the many social issues, often ignored, prevalent throughout the north and reserves across Canada. While the novel is a fiction, it is based on Joey's own teaching experiences and research on Missing and Murdered Indigenous women. Having written the story through the perspective of a white male, Beneath the Northern Lights offers a unique perspective on current First Nations issues, and the many ways Canada as a country is failing these peoples.
